A range of high yielding oilseed rapes with added agronomic functionality will be showcased by seed breeders DSV UK at Cereals 2019.

One of the key features will be DSV’s new Turnip Yellow Virus (TuYV) resistant oilseed rape variety Temptation which has one of the strongest all-round production and agronomic packages in the new 2019/20 AHDB RL, says the company’s Sarah Hawthorne.

“Temptation is listed as suitable for the whole of the UK with a combination of high yields in challenging conditions and strong all-round disease package making it one of the most reliable ‘drill and forget’ oilseed rape choices available.

“By any standards it is one of the highest performing varieties currently available in the UK, demonstrating a high and consistent yield with a score of 101% of control representing 5.35t/ha in the current RL.

“Temptation also has an exceptional oil content of 46.0% too - the highest achieved by any variety recommended as suitable for the whole of the UK.

“Its production potential is supported by an outstanding agronomic package featuring strong resistance to phoma stem canker and light leaf spot in addition to the TuYV resistance.”

DSV’s new Clearfield varieties Plurax CL and Phoenix CL also offer huge potential for UK growers by erradicating the yield gap between previous Clearfield oilseed rapes and normal varieties, she adds.

“Plurax CL has a unique combination of yield-stabilising factors including a good package of disease resistance plus excellent resistances and tolerances against stem canker, Light Leaf Spot and Verticillium wilt.

“One of the few varieties to be tested by NIAB across 7 sites over two years in the UK, Plurax CL has delivered the highest gross output and oil content of all Clearfield varieties in the data set.”

DSV’s Phoenix CL also delivers consistent high yield performance in a range of very difficult conditions with its yield stability underpinned by early vigour and a deep taproot system, she explains.

“This allows the variety to access water and nutrients in deeper soil layers, so as well as good establishment it has the ability to recover quickly in the spring after a challenging winter.

“Furthermore, it has a good package of disease resistance and exceptional pod shatter resistance that protects the seed through the full growing season giving it outstanding protection from sowing to harvest.”

DSV’s new Crocodile CR Clubroot resistant oilseed rape has also added valuable extra disease resistance whilst delivering yields higher than many traditional high performers, Sarah Hawthorne points out.

“Existing Clubroot resistant varieties perform well below the yield levels expected in modern oilseed rape production.

“Crocodile CR hasn’t just closed the yield gap expected with existing Clubroot resistant varieties, it’s reversed it with many modern high performing varieties struggling to keep up with it.

“The variety joined the candidate list this November and is the first ever Clubroot resistant variety to get there on its own merit without special dispensation whilst featuring the best disease package in the Clubroot market.”

The DSV stand is no. 433 at Cereals 2019.
